2026 Residency
Top Tips for Writing a Standout Application
Joining the next cohort of Experience by Industry Standard is a major step toward building a meaningful career in post-production for documentary filmmaking. Whether you aim for a career in editorial, color, sound, post-producing, archival research, or motion design, your application is your first chance to show who you are, what drives you, and why you're ready to take the leap.
Here are our top tips to help your application stand out:
Be Specific About Your Craft
We’re not just looking for general enthusiasm about film—we’re looking for individuals who are actively building skills in their chosen track. Whether it's editing, sound, or archival producing, speak directly about why that discipline matters to you. What draws you to it? How have you already started engaging with it? What do you hope to learn next?
Tell Us What Drives You
We want to know what motivates you. Are you passionate about unscripted storytelling? Obsessed with pacing in an edit? Energized by the power of archival footage? Share a moment, project, or influence that helped you realize this is the work you want to do.
Show, Don’t Tell
Whenever possible, ground your application in real experiences. Instead of saying, “I’m a great collaborator,” tell us about a time you worked with others to solve a creative problem. Instead of “I’m passionate about editing,” describe a project that lit a fire in you—and what you learned from it.
Highlight Your Readiness to Learn
This program isn’t about having it all figured out—it’s about potential. What’s important is that you’re eager to grow, open to feedback, and ready to be part of a team. You don’t need years of experience, but you do need to be serious about your craft.
Research the Tracks Before You Choose
Make sure you fully understand what each apprenticeship track entails before selecting one. Your application should reflect a clear connection between your interests and the track you're applying for.
Use the Portfolio to Show Range and Intent
If your track allows for a portfolio submission, treat it like a visual resume. Select samples that show both your creativity and your growth. It doesn’t have to be perfect—but it should reflect your direction and potential.
Authenticity Matters
Be genuine and honest in your tone. We’re looking to understand your story, your goals, and how this residency fits into the bigger picture of your journey. Let your voice come through.
Experience Residencies is about opening pathways—between you and the teams making some of the most impactful documentary films today. We’re not looking for the most polished candidate—we’re looking for those ready to take the next step with purpose, humility, and drive.
We hope to see your story come through. Applications for the 2026 cycle are now open.
